The transit of the Sun in different signs of the zodiac cycle is called Sankranti in Sanskrit. So, we have twelve Sankrantis in a year. When the Sun enters the sign of Sagittarius it is called Dhanu or Dhanur Sankranti.
Dhanu Sankranti indicates the beginning of Dhanurmasa in the Hindu Solar Calendar. Dhanu is a fire sign ruled by the most auspicious planet Jupiter. Sun represents our soul, so the confluence of the energy of Sun and Sagittarius is considered a favourable time for prayers, pilgrimage, and donations. This is the apt time to worship Lord Vishnu and Sun to gain their blessings and remove doshams from the chart.

जपाकुसुमसंकाशं काश्यपेयं महाद्युतिम् ।
तमोऽरिं सर्वपापघ्नं प्रणतोऽस्मि दिवाकरम् ॥ १
The English translation is:
“I bow to the Sun, who is red like the hibiscus flower, a descendant of Kashyapa, immensely radiant, the enemy of darkness, and the destroyer of all sins”
The date of Dhanu Sankranti per Drik Panchang for the year 2025 is-
The twelve Aditya are the sons of Devi Aditi. She is the mother of all Devas. Aditya is the light of the Sun God.
Aditya takes different forms in all the twelve Zodiac signs. Each Aditya is given a different name corresponding to the energy of the transiting zodiac sign. The Aditya of Sagittarius is known as Anshuman.
Anshuman is radiant but not scorching. He is learned and discreet. He knows how to pick a gold nugget from the heap of mud. Every Aditya has a dedicated mantra to it.
Chanting the sacred mantra - Om Ghrini Anshuman Adityaya namah can help you to attain the grace of Anshuman Aditya.
The sanskrit version is as follows:
|| ॐ घृणि अंशुमान आदित्याय नमः ||
When King Daksha refused to invite his Son-in-law Lord Shiva for his humongous yajna, his daughter, Goddess Sati died by self immolation after jumping into the same yajna fire.
This invited the wrath of her husband – Lord Shiva towards King Daksha and his supporters. In this chaos, the Sun God agreed with King Daksha’s decision of not inviting Lord Shiva. So, Lord Shiva’s wrath dimmed the brilliance of the Sun God.
This happened when Sun was in Dhanu. Therefore, the Sun has dimmed radiance and mild heat during the transit in the Sagittarius.
The legend says that Mura daitya became extremely powerful. Lord Krishna chased him through the entire cosmos and killed hima when Surya entered the Dhanu Rashi.
This gave him the epithet “Murari”. The Ari or killer of Mur. This shows that in Hinduism every name has a meaning which corresponds to a quality of the person.

In Bargarh, Odisha world’s largest open air theatre festival is held during the entire fortnight followed by Dhanu Sankranti. This is called Dhanu Yatra. The whole city is imitated in the image of real Mathura.
The actors enact the entire story of Lord Krishna. The story starts with King Ugrasen till the killing of King Kansa by his nephew Lord Krishna. Many experts say that the performance is the symbolic presentation of the freedom struggle.
King Kansa presents the colonists who are killed (driven away) by Lord Krishna (natives). A special sweet Dhanu Muan is prepared during the festivities. The main ingredients are fried paddy, jaggery, ghee, and coconut. All of them are the winter crops signifying abundance.
The legend says that the Sun God travels the entire universe in his chariot driven by seven horses. This maintains the time and momentum of the entire creation. However during the transit through the Dhanu Rashi the horses of the chariot became extremely weary and thirsty.
So, the Sun God took them to a nearby pond to quench their thirst. But when he loosened their reigns, the Sun God realised he cannot stay at a place. This will stop time and the entire cosmic momentum.
Then he noticed two donkeys or Khar in Sanskrit near the pond. He attached the chariots to the donkeys so the horses could rest. But donkeys were slow and it slowed the speed of the chariot.
This explains the lessened radiance of the Sun during the transit. This period is called Khar mas or the donkey’s month. The weakened Sun is considered inauspicious.
Whenever the Sun passes through this Jupiterian sign his power is diminished. So, all auspicious activities like buying new property, marriage, and inauguration are stopped. But the combined energy of Jupiter and Sun is excellent for nourishing the soul and spiritual practices.
So, people engage in spiritual activities and donations . Many devotees take holy dips in various rivers.
In astrology the transit of the Sun through Sagittarius starts with the Sun entering the gandanta. The gandanta knot is the area of transition between two signs of different elements viz the water and fire. The Sun leaves a water sign Scorpio to enter the fire sign Sagittarius.
This knot signifies the grey area where the planet transitions in the new element but has some traces of the previous element.
The gandanta knot carries heavy karmic debt. Any planet that passes through gandanta represents the pending Karma of the related planet in the chart of the native.
Sun in gandanta often gives challenges in father-child relationships. The sun is weak and is said to be in sandhi (joint). It also signifies the period of complete self transformations to get rid of the karmic baggage. The period of transformation can be predicted based on the running dasha and transits in the native’s chart.

Sun passes through three nakshatras during the transit in Dhanu Rashi. In each nakshatra the Sun blends its energy with the qualities of the ruling deity
Moola Nakshatra:
The nakshatra is ruled by Ketu and Nirrti. Here Sun becomes investigative and loves to dig for the truth.
Purva Ashadha:
It is ruled by Venus and Apas. The native attains courage and indomitable focus for victory.
Uttar Ashadha:
It is ruled by the Sun and Vishvadevas. The natives gain leadership qualities and are skilled in long-term planning.
Each Sankranti becomes unique due to the continuous planetary transits.
The present planetary positions are:
In the current transit, dhanu rashi is receiving a combined aspect of both Saturn and Jupiter. This double influence activates a strong karmic play in Sagittarius and will significantly impact the areas of life governed by this sign in your birth chart.
The Sun will join Mars in Dhanu rashi. They will be receiving the combined aspects of both Jupiter and Saturn. The proximity of the Sun will combust Mars.
The generic predictions according to the above planetary positions are as follows:
Dos:
Don’ts:
It is time to uphold dharma. Everything you learned during the Sun’s previous transit now calls for application. Honour the principles, values, and wisdom passed down through your family and lineage.
Dhanu Sankranti is an astrological phenomenon which will impact our lives. The impact may be mild or transformative depending on the planetary aspects, conjunctions and dashas that will play events in the individual’s chart.
On a mundane level, the Sun is government and authority. The transition is likely to create turbulence in the professional sphere for many, especially when new policies or laws come to the forefront.

Many clients and students ask her a usual query- why do we prefer copper vessels for the worship of Sun God.
Ekktaa says that Copper is a Satvik and spiritually purifying metal. It has always been used to craft hawan kund and other sacred vessels for worship in Hinduism. It enhances positivity, spiritual inclination, and inner strength. Further being a fiery metal, it resonates with the fiery energy of the Sun. Many experts believe that the reddish colour of the metal also matches with the core of the luminary.
When a copper vessel is used to offer water to the sun it makes it easier to channelize the energy of the Sun God. It helps us to imbibe the optimism and motivation of the rising Sun.
